The New Brunswick Senior Baseball League season’s second half began with the Moncton Mets winning both of their games last week, while the Chatham Miramichi Honda Ironmen and Fredericton St. Louis Bar and Grill Royals split their latest games.

The Mets (8-8) edged the Ironmen (6-8) 1-0 July 15 at Ironmen Field. The contest scheduled for July 17 between Chatham and Moncton at Kiwanis Park was rained out.

 

The Ironmen downed the Royals (11-7) 5-2 July 18 at home while the Royals beat the defending champ Charlottetown Gaudet’s Auto Body Islanders (13-8) 3-1 July 14 on Prince Edward Island. The Mets tripped the struggling Saint John Alpines (4-11) 10-7 the same day in the Hub City.

 

The coming week is looking to be a busy one in the senior circuit, as the Ironmen will host the Royals Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. and July 28 at 7:30 p.m. Chatham will also entertain the Mets Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and take on the Alpines in a 7:30 p.m. doubleheader Friday in Miramichi.

 

Fredericton will be in Saint John Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. contest at David Ring Memorial Field. The Mets will host the Royals Saturday in a 7:30 p.m. start, and Charlottetown and Saint John will do battle July 28 at 1 p.m. at Victoria Park
 

Junior playoff race underway

 

The New Brunswick Junior Baseball League playoff race is in full swing as the regular season approaches the finish line, with the Saint John Doiron Sports Junior Alpines (14-6) padding their lead with three wins over the Chatham O’Donaghue’s Junior Ironmen (6-12) and a victory over Moncton’s Metro Mudcats (9-10).

 

The Alpines thumped the Ironmen 10-0 and beat them 4-3 in a doubleheader July 14 at David Ring Memorial Field, then edged the Mudcats 7-6 July 17 at home and walked off the Ironmen with a 6-5 decision July 20. The Alpines fell 7-2 to the Mudcats July 18 in Moncton.
 

The Ironmen edged the Mudcats 4-3 July 15 on the road. The Fredericton Tim Hortons Altimax Royals (8-9) toppled the Ironmen 14-1 July 17 in Miramichi.

 

The game July 18 between the Ironmen and Royals un the province’s capital ended in a 7-1 Fredericton win on home field.

 

The final three regular-season games in the junior league will feature the Alpines and Royals Monday at 7:30 p.m. in Fredericton and the Ironmen and Mudcats at 7:30 p.m. in Moncton. The Royals and Ironmen will hit the field Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in Miramichi.

 

Intermediate seasons winding down

 

The Dieppe Cardinals got back in the win column in the Southern New Brunswick Baseball League as the regular season for the province’s intermediate baseball leagues enters the home stretch.

 

The Cardinals (14-1) picked up a pair of wins Sunday, defeating the Lancaster Stingrays (2-13) 10-3 and 15-2 in a doubleheader in Grand Bay-Westfield. Dieppe also beat the Metro Mudcats (2-12) 8-5 July 18.
 

The Saint John Mariners (10-5) swept the KV Red Sox (7-11) in a doubleheader July 14, winning 4-3 and 9-4. The Saint John Angels (10-3) thumped the Stingrays 13-2 the same day at Senior Lions Field, and the Angels defeated the Metro Mudcats (2-12) by a 9-5 margin July 17. The Angels edged the Mariners 5-4 and the Mariners blasted the Stingrays 20-2 July 20.

 

This week, the Red Sox and Angels are slated to renew acquaintances Monday at 7:30 p.m., with the Mariners and Mudcats facing off Tuesday at 8 p.m. The Cardinals will visit the Red Sox Wednesday at 6:15 p.m., followed by an 8 p.m. date between the Angels and Cardinals Thursday and a noon doubleheader Saturday between the Mudcats and Stingrays at Senior Lions Field.
 

The Cardinals and Mariners will meet July 28 at 7:30 p.m.

 

In the Capital City Intermediate Baseball League, the Woodstock Shiretowners (6-2) trounced the Fredericton Ritchie’s Carpet Warehouse White Sox (2-8) 14-2 July 15, the Fredericton Launchpad Sports Expos (10-1) downed the White Sox 11-4 July 15, and the Expos beat the Devon Boys Lawn Care Orioles (5-6) 4-1 July 16. The Orioles picked up a 3-1 win over the Fredericton Warehouse Barbershop Astros (3-9) July 18, and the Shiretowners doubled the White Sox 6-3 July 18.

 

On tap this week are games Monday between the Shiretowners and Orioles at 6:30 p.m. in Fredericton, Tuesday between the Astros and Expos at 6:30 p.m. in the capital and the White Sox and Shiretowners at 7:30 p.m. in Woodstock, and Thursday between the White Sox and Astros at 6:30 p.m. and the Expos and Shiretowners at 7:30 p.m.

 

The Miramichi Valley Baseball League’s second-last week of the regular-season saw the Tracadie Aigles (10-6) topple the Newcastle Mike’s Bar and Grill Cardinals (9-7) 13-5 July 15 and beat the Chatham Head Tigers (5-9) 9-3 July 18. The Cardinals downed the Aigles 6-5 in a walk-off July 16 at home and defeated the Dalhousie McIntyre Refrigeration Dodgers (6-8) by a 7-5 margin July 17.

This week’s games will feature the Aigles and Dodgers Monday at 8 p.m. in Dalhousie, the Cardinals and Tigers Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Chatham Head, the Tigers and Cardinals Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in Newcastle, and the Dodgers and Aigles Thursday at 8 p.m. in Tracadie. Chatham Head will host Dalhousie July 30 at 8 p.m. for a make-up game.
