The Islanders went 2-2 at the tournament while representing the New Brunswick Senior Baseball League from Thursday to Sunday, losing their round-robin finale 5-4 to the host Team Ontario Saturday afternoon.
Charlottetown beat Team British Columbia 5-0 Friday night after defeating Team Newfoundland and Labrador 6-4 and falling 12-2 to Team Quebec Thursday.
The Islanders took five affiliates from around the senior circuit and one from the New Brunswick Junior Baseball League with them to nationals, with Fredericton’s Max Grant joining Charlottetown from the Fredericton Tim Hortons Altimax Royals junior program.
Oromocto pitcher Colby Lyle and import Nathan Van Putten of Ontario were picked up from the Fredericton St. Louis Bar and Grill Royals senior club, along with Moncton Mets veteran Justin Cormier of Sainte-Anne-de-Kent, and Miramichi’s Mike McKay and Zach Newman of the Chatham Miramichi Honda Ironmen.
At the dish, Cormier, McKay, and Grant combined for a .358 batting average in four games, with 14 hits on 39 at-bats, along with 10 runs scored and a stolen base.
On the mound, Lyle went the distance and tossed a three-hitter in the win for Charlottetown Friday against British Columbia. He also struck out three opposing batters.
Van Putten was on the bump for two innings Thursday versus Newfoundland and Labrador and five innings Saturday against Ontario. He picked up a save against Newfoundland and allowed a combined four runs on five hits while issuing a free pass and fanning nine in two games.
Newman’s line against Quebec included seven runs on five hits, two walks, and a strikeout in one and two-thirds of an inning.
The Islanders’ affiliates will return to their regular teams this week for the senior league post-season, which will begin Saturday at 6 p.m. in Fredericton with Game 1 of the best-of-three miniseries between the Royals and Saint John AJ’s Alpines to determine the fourth playoff seed. Game 2 is Sept. 1 at 1 p.m. at David Ring Memorial Field.
If needed, Game 3 is set for Sept. 3 at 7:30 p.m. at Royals Field. The series winner will face the Islanders in the best-of-seven league semifinals, with the Ironmen and Mets facing off in the other semifinal.
The semifinal winners will meet in the best-of-seven league final, with the champion earning the right to represent New Brunswick at next year’s nationals in Regina, Sask.
Moncton’s Metro Mudcats are up 2-1 on the Saint John Doiron’s Sports Junior Alpines in the best-of-five junior league final, which started Wednesday with a 16-2 Mudcats victory in Saint John. The Mudcats won 11-5 in Game 2 Thursday at Kiwanis Park.
The Alpines won Game 3 by a 12-10 margin Saturday in the Port City.
Game 4 is Monday at 7:30 p.m. in Moncton. If needed, Game 5 is Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Saint John.
The Dieppe Cardinals took the series opener 5-2 over the Saint John Mariners in the best-of-five Southern New Brunswick Baseball League final Thursday at Lakeburn Park. Game 2 was slated for Sunday at David Ring Memorial Field.
Game 3 is Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Lakeburn. Games 4 and 5 haven’t been scheduled yet.
The Woodstock Shiretowners lead the Fredericton Launchpad Sports Expos 1-0 in the best-of-five Capital City Intermediate Baseball League final after winning 6-2 in Game 1 Thursday at Royals Field. Game 2 is Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Woodstock, followed by Game 3 Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in Fredericton.
In the Miramichi Valley Baseball League, the Tracadie Aigles lead the Newcastle Mike’s Bar and Grill Cardinals 2-0 in the best-of-five final after winning 1-0 and 9-2 in Games 1 and 2, respectively. Game 3 was Sunday in Newcastle.
Game 4 is Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Newcastle. If needed, the series will return to Tracadie for Game 5 Thursday at 7:30 p.m., with Game 6 set for Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Newcastle. Game 7 is Sept. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Tracadie, if necessary.
