The Alpines (7-17) may have had a rough season to date, but they showed signs of reversing their fortunes with two consecutive wins last week over the Moncton Mets (14-12). Saint John beat the Mets 2-0 Aug. 7 and 5-3 Aug. 8 before falling 16-4 to Moncton Sunday on the road.
Zach Allain and Noah Woodall cashed in both Alpines runs Aug. 7 against the Mets. Woodall also went the distance on the bump for Saint John, scattering five hits and fanning three Alpines while walking two.
Justin Cormier took the pitching loss for the Mets with his line of two runs, six hits, a walk, and six strikeouts in seven innings of work.
Sherman Yeo landed the win for Saint John in the home win Aug. 8 over Moncton, giving up a hit and punching out one Moncton hitter in one and one-third innings. Nathan Betts conceded three runs on eight hits while walking two Mets and sitting down two in five-plus innings.
Losing pitcher Kevin Aube and veteran Moncton ace Sam Lund allowed a combined five runs on seven hits while issuing three free passes and striking out five in seven innings.
Cole Flowers drove in a pair of runs for Saint John. Matt Beach, Mark Galbraith, and Mark Legere added an RBI apiece for the Alpines. Moncton’s runs were scored by Luc Vautour, Shawn Bartley, and Luke Robison.
The Alpines started this week with a 7-3 win over the Royals Monday in Fredericton.
The Alpines are six games back of the fourth-place Fredericton St. Louis Bar and Grill Royals (13-13) and 6.5 games behind the Mets and Chatham Miramichi Honda Ironmen (13-11). They’re trailing the defending champ Charlottetown Gaudet’s Auto Body Islanders (17-11) by 8.5 games.
Fredericton started strong earlier in the season, but has gone 3-7 in its last 10 games. Saint John is 2-8 in its last 10, while Chatham is 7-3, and Charlottetown and Moncton are 6-4.
The Alpines will look to finish strong in their date with the Royals Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Saint John. They’ll also host the Ironmen in a 2 p.m. doubleheader Saturday.
The Islanders will represent the New Brunswick senior circuit at the 2024 Baseball Canada Men’s National Championship from Aug. 22 to 25 in Tecumseh, Ont.
The official list of affiliates from around the league hasn’t been released yet, but Charlottetown’s regular roster includes Miramichi athlete Max Jardine – who spent the summer on Prince Edward Island after joining the Charlottetown Islanders major-junior hockey squad mid-season last year – and former Ironmen import Jack Kraft.
Kraft, who hails from New Jersey, likely won’t be eligible to suit up for the nationals as he isn’t a Canadian citizen.
After the opening ceremonies Aug. 21 at 7:30 p.m. and the home-run derby at 8 p.m., the Islanders will take on Team Quebec Aug. 22 at 11 a.m. Charlottetown will face Team Newfoundland and Labrador Aug. 22 at 5 p.m., then hit the field for a date with Team British Columbia Aug. 23 at 6:30 p.m.
The Islanders’ round-robin schedule will wrap up Aug. 24 in an 11 a.m. showdown with the host Team Ontario.
The quarterfinals are set for Aug. 24 at 7 and 8 p.m., followed by the semifinals Aug. 25 at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The bronze-medal contest is at 5 p.m., with the championship game set for 8 p.m.
All game times are listed in the Atlantic Daylight Time zone.
