Dieppe wins N.B. intermediate baseball crown

Brunswick News - Nathan DeLong

The Dieppe Cardinals have won the 2024 New Brunswick intermediate baseball championship. SUBMITTED

The Dieppe Cardinals are this year’s New Brunswick intermediate baseball champions.

The Cardinals defeated the Tracadie Aigles 5-4 in the final Sept. 14 in Saint John after beating the Fredericton Launchpad Sports Expos 9-0 in the semifinals earlier that day.

The Aigles punched their ticket to the final with an 11-3 triumph over their Miramichi Valley Baseball League rivals, the Newcastle Mike’s Bar and Grill Cardinals, in the other crossover.

In round-robin action, Dieppe and the Expos battled to a 6-6 draw, Tracadie beat the host KV Red Sox 15-11, the Aigles downed the Expos 7-3, Dieppe thumped the Red Sox 13-3, the Expos tripped the Woodstock Shiretowners 11-8, the Aigles toppled Newcastle 8-1, Newcastle won 5-1 over Woodstock, Dieppe prevailed over Newcastle by a 5-2 margin, and the Red Sox doubled the Shiretowners 6-3.

The tournament was originally scheduled for Sept. 6 to 8 in Saint John and Rothesay, but was staggered over the past week due to rain last weekend. That resulted in games being played Sept. 6, 9, 10, 13, and 14.

The tournament format saw the top two teams from the Miramichi Valley circuit, Capital City Intermediate Baseball League, and Southern New Brunswick Baseball League represented. The Red Sox and Dieppe were the Southern New Brunswick league’s entries, with Newcastle and Tracadie coming from the Miramichi Valley league, and Woodstock and Fredericton attending from the Capital City league.
