The Fredericton St. Louis Bar and Grill Royals split their latest games in New Brunswick Senior Baseball League play, while the Chatham Miramichi Honda Ironmen extended their winning streak.

The Royals (12-9) dropped a 10-9 decision to the Ironmen (9-8) July 23 in Miramichi before edging the Moncton Mets (10-9) 1-0 July 27 at Kiwanis Park.

 

Meanwhile, the Ironmen picked up their fourth consecutive victory with the win over Fredericton and a sweep of the last-place Saint John Alpines (4-14) in a late-night doubleheader July 26 at home, with a 9-6 victory in the first contest and a 1-0 triumph in the second.

 

Chatham’s winning streak began July 18, when the Ironmen prevailed by a 5-2 margin at home.

 

The game July 25 between the Ironmen and Mets in Miramichi was rained out. No make-up date has been announced.

 

The Alpines were scheduled to visit the league-leading Charlottetown Gaudet’s Auto Body Islanders (13-8) Sunday afternoon at Victoria Park before facing the Mets in an evening showdown at Kiwanis Park. The Ironmen hosted the Royals Sunday night.

 

Other games on tap this week will feature the Islanders and Mets Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in Moncton and the Ironmen and Royals at 7:30 p.m. in Fredericton. The Alpines and Royals will hit the field Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Saint John, and Fredericton will host Moncton Friday at 7:30 p.m. Chatham and Charlottetown will meet Saturday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Ironmen Field.

 

The Alpines and Mets will do battle Aug. 4 at 7 p.m. in the Hub City.

 

Junior playoff matchups set

 

The New Brunswick Junior Baseball League’s regular season concluded last week with an 8-6 win for the Fredericton Tim Hortons Altimax Royals (12-9) over the Saint John Doiron Sports Junior Alpines (14-7) July 22 in the province’s capital, along with a 7-4 victory for Moncton’s Metro Mudcats (10-11) over the Chatham O’Donaghue’s Junior Ironmen (6-15) the same night at Kiwanis Park.
 

The Royals thumped the Ironmen 10-1 July 24 in Miramichi and blanked the Mudcats 4-0 the next day in Moncton.

 

The league semifinals will see the Alpines taking on the Ironmen, and the Royals facing the Mudcats, in a best-of-five series. The winners will advance to the league final.

 

Alpines heading to nationals

 

The junior league playoff schedule hasn’t been released yet, but the post-season will likely get underway after the Alpines represent New Brunswick at the 2024 Baseball Canada 22-and-Under National Championships from Thursday to Sunday in Dartmouth, N.S.

 

Saint John has picked up Fredericton’s Max Grant and Shane Sullivan as affiliates for the nationals. Mike Doucette of Moncton will serve as chef de mission.

 

The Alpines’ regulars at the tournament will include Rothesay’s Mitchell Jackson, Hunter Valcour, and Jack Bennett, along with Quispamsis products Ben Cairns, Tyler Doucette, Matt Peacock, Brett Baxter, Alex Peacock, and Jack Baxter. Also suiting up are Jacob McCarthy of Upper Golden Grove and Saint John’s Alex Maloney, Ryan Galbraith, and Owen Lohnes.

 

Coaching staff will include Quispamsis skip David Pender and assistant coaches Trevor Beach of Quispamsis, Jason McCarthy of Upper Golden Grove, and Matt Mitchell of Rothesay.

 

The Alpines’ schedule opens Thursday at 9 a.m. against Team Newfoundland and Labrador, followed by a 3 p.m. matchup with Team Nova Scotia 2. New Brunswick will face Team Ontario 1 Friday at 1:30 p.m. and take on Team Manitoba Saturday at 9:30 a.m. The quarterfinals are Saturday at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m., with the semifinals Sunday at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The championship game is set for Sunday at 7:30 p.m.
 

The fourth-place game is Sunday at 11 a.m., followed by the bronze-medal game at 4:30 p.m.

 

Intermediate seasons wrapping up

 

The Southern New Brunswick Baseball League season entered the home stretch with the Saint John Mariners (13-5) edging the Saint John Angels (10-4) 1-0 July 21 at David Ring Memorial Field before toppling the Metro Mudcats (3-15) 8-7 the same day. The Dieppe Cardinals (15-1) thumped the Lancaster Stingrays (3-14) 10-3 and 15-2 in a doubleheader July 21 in Grand Bay-Westfield, and the KV Red Sox (8-12) beat the Angels 13-8 July 22.

 

The Mariners toppled the Mudcats 22-10 in a slugfest July 23 at Lakeburn Park, the Cardinals downed the Red Sox 13-7 July 24 at Wells Recreational Field, and the Stingrays blanked the Mudcats 6-0 July 27. The Mudcats blasted the Stingrays 17-4 July 27 at Senior Lions Field.

 

In Sunday’s action, the Mariners shut out the Stingrays with a 7-0 triumph. The regular season will wrap up this week with games Monday between the Mariners and Angels at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday between the Cardinals and Mudcats at 7:30 p.m., and Wednesday between the Stingrays and Angels at 7:30 p.m. The Angels will face the Cardinals Thursday at 8 p.m.

 

In the Capital City Intermediate Baseball League, the Woodstock Shiretowners (7-4) beat the Devon Boys Lawn Care Orioles (5-7) 7-0 July 22 at Thompson Field. The Fredericton Ritchie’s Carpet Warehouse White Sox (3-8) edged the Shiretowers 2-1 July 23, and the Fredericton Launchpad Sports Expos (11-1) tripped the Shiretowners 1-0 July 25.
 

This week’s action will see the Shiretowners and Expos do battle Monday at 6:30 p.m. at Royals Field and the Orioles and White Sox renew acquaintances at 8:30 p.m. The Fredericton Warehouse Barbershop Astros (3-9) and White Sox will meet Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., and the Orioles and White Sox have a 6:30 p.m. date Thursday. The Shiretowners will visit the Expos Thursday for an 8:30 p.m. start.

 

In the Miramichi Valley Baseball League, the Dalhousie McIntyre Refrigeration Dodgers (7-8) edged the first-place Tracadie Aigles (10-7) 6-4 July 22. The Chatham Head Tigers (7-9) swept a home-and-home against their hometown rival Newcastle Mike’s Bar and Grill Cardinals (9-9), winning the first game 9-2 July 23 and taking the second contest 9-8 July 24.

 

The game July 25 between the Dodgers and Aigles in Tracadie was postponed to Thursday at 8 p.m. due to rain. The Tigers will also host the Dodgers in a make-up game Tuesday at 8 p.m.
